Great Glen Way
The Great Glen Way is one of Scotland’s most iconic long distance trails, a stunning 75-mile (120 km) route stretching from Fort William in the southwest to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands.
Starting, or finishing beneath the mighty Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain, the trail follows Scotland’s famous geological fault line and winds alongside the historic Caledonian Canal, designed by engineer Thomas Telford.
Whether you’re an experienced walker or just love a good scenic stroll, the Great Glen Way has something for everyone. It can be completed in 4–7 days, with plenty of welcoming towns and villages along the way for rest stops and overnight stays. Most of the route follows peaceful canal towpaths, forest tracks, and quiet roads, with a few more challenging sections for those looking for adventure.
Keep your eyes peeled for osprey, golden eagles, red kites, pine martens, and deer as you take in some of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes.

Thomas Telford Bridge
Nestled in the heart of the Highlands at Invermoriston, the old stone bridge crossing the River Moriston at Invermoriston falls is one of the area’s most charming landmarks. Dating back to the early 19th century, it was completed in 1813 and is closely linked with the famous engineer Thomas Telford, who played a huge role in improving transport across the Highlands, including the Caledonian Canal.
This double-arched bridge is built around a natural rocky outcrop in the river, giving it both strength and character. Until the 1930’s when the current bridge which forms part of the A82, the old bridge carried the main road between Fort Augustus and Inverness.
Even though it’s no longer used as the main route, the bridge remains a popular spot for visitors. The bridge is showing signs of wear, but you can cross it on foot and enjoy views of the rapids and falls below it.
Over the years, the river has sometimes become a raging torrent. In one fierce flood (1951), trees carried downstream battered the bridge, even sweeping away sections of its parapet.

Invermoriston Falls & Riverside Folly
The Invermoriston Falls are not a single towering waterfall, but rather a dramatic series of rapids where the River Moriston tumbles over rocks. The falls are beautiful and ever changing with the water level.
From time to time, kayakers navigating the falls, adding a splash of adventure to the peaceful surroundings. Whether you’re here to watch the action or simply enjoy the scenery, it’s a spot that never fails to charm visitors of all ages.

A pleasant woodland path accessed from the other side of the main road, beside the community hall, leads to a delightful Victorian summer house, often called the Invermoriston Folly. Built as a viewpoint for the Laird of Glenmoriston, it offered guests a charming place to take in the scenery and, if they were lucky, watch salmon leap their way up the rapids during their annual migration.
