In the Heart of the Great Glen close to Loch Ness

Inverness City

Staying with us as a B&B or Self Catering Guest here in Invermoriston your principal "big town" is the city of Inverness, 26 miles from Invermoriston with Drumnadrochit, and its tourist attractions and Loch Ness monster connections, the only significant population centre in between. So if you are staying with us and are looking for shopping, restaurants, cafés and cinemas, Inverness is your only choice.
By the standards of much of the UK it's not a big city with a population of less than 70,000, but because of its status as capital of the Highlands and the huge area that it supplies it has always seemed to us to punch well above its weight, with a vast range of industrial supplies available. Our impression when we first moved here was not of a tourist town, although in the summer there are many.
There is a modern shopping mall, pictured above that contrasts with the quaintness of the Victorian Market with its small character shops. The High Street is pedestrianised and the architecture is a sometimes uneasy blend of red sandstone and 60s concrete. But by and large, you will find whatever you are looking for in Inverness in terms of history, culture, entertainment or supplies together with transport links of every type. A modern lively city.

Fort William to Inverness

The Great Glen in the Highlands of Scotland runs from Fort William in the south 75 miles to the north west to Inverness. Fort Augustus, 6 miles south of Invermoriston is more or less at the centre point.
The entire distance can be travelled by water using the Caledonian Canal which links Lochs Lochy, Oich and Ness. This is an area of sparse population with a single road, the A82 running the length of the Great Glen with comparatively few options to leave it. The A887 leads west from Invermoriston with no significant town before the Kyle of Lochalsh, 80 miles distant. It's worth remembering that Fort Augustus has a population of under 1000, Drumnadrochit is similar. Invermoriston had only 162 people at the 2001 census and the whole of Glenmoriston 264.
